Communicationes Rome-Italy (19-05-2011).- “I have the honour and great happiness to present to you our religious family: the 4,000 friars and 11,000 Discalced Carmelite nuns spread throughout the world, who remember you daily in their prayer.”
With these words, the Superior General of the Discalced Carmelites, Fr Saverio Cannistrà, opened his address to Pope Benedict XVI in the Special Audience granted this morning by the Pontiff to the members of the Teresianum Pontifical Faculty of Rome on its 75th anniversary of foundation.
Before a large number of friars from the communities of the Teresianum and the General Curia assembled in the Clementine Hall in the Vatican, Fr General thanked the Pontiff for his fatherly reception and called the event “a gesture of the greatest value and significance for us all.”
During his address, Fr Saverio referred to the Teresian Carmel’s mission in the Church as “the daily exercise of prayer, fidelity to simple prayer,” as well as its wider missionary aspect, and the teaching and study of Theology and Spirituality, to which the Superior General referred as “an important part” within the mission of Carmel.
At the same time, Fr General told the Pope that the whole Order was listening to the new cycle of catechesis on Wednesdays devoted to the topic of prayer. He said they were of great help in preparing for the celebration of the V Centenary of the birth of Saint Teresa in 2015. “It would be beautiful if this year could be declared for the universal Church a year dedicated to prayer,” added Fr Saverio Cannistrà.
